Viessmann Heat Pump, On-Demand Water Heater, and a Honeywell Thermostat Reset: A Practical Guide

There is no universal answer

I'm a quality/compliance manager at a heating and hot water company. I review every delivery before it reaches customers—roughly 220 systems a year. In the Q1 2024 audit, we rejected 7% of first deliveries for documentation mismatches, not equipment failures. The pattern behind those rejections was always the same: someone sold a system before checking the site.

So when people ask whether a Viessmann heat pump or a Viessmann on demand water heater is better, I don't have a single answer. What I have is a decision framework.

Start with the scenario, not the brand

Here is the thing: the best piece of heating equipment can fail if it's matched to the wrong building. I see four common situations:

  • Existing high-temperature radiators and gas available: a condensing boiler may be more practical
  • Low-temperature emitters and a well-insulated envelope: a heat pump often wins
  • Small space and low simultaneous hot water demand: an on-demand or combi approach works well
  • Thermostat behaving badly: reset it before replacing anything

Everything else is detail.

Scenario A: The Viessmann heat pump is not a magic box

A modern air-to-water Viessmann heat pump is genuinely good equipment. But the unit alone doesn't make a system.

In March 2023, we audited three callbacks in one month. In all three, the heat pump was sized correctly on paper, but the existing radiators were sized for 80°C flow temperature. The heat pump couldn't deliver that. The homeowners were cold, and not because the heat pump was defective.

If your house has underfloor heating or radiators selected for 55°C, a heat pump can be a no-brainer. If the only change is swapping a boiler for a heat pump while keeping old high-temperature radiators, that's a red flag.

Does that mean I'm anti-heat pump? No. It means I'm pro-math. In that situation, a modern gas condensing boiler might be the better call. It can operate well above 90% efficiency in ideal conditions, and it will work with the existing pipework. That's not a brand comparison—it's physics.

If you want the efficiency without redoing the whole house, a bivalent setup can be a good compromise: a gas boiler for the coldest weeks, a Viessmann heat pump for the rest. It costs more upfront, but it buys you the best of both.

Scenario B: What an on demand water heater really means

I get a lot of client searches for a Viessmann on demand water heater. Look, in many markets this isn't a separate box. It's the instant hot water function inside a condensing combi boiler or a heat pump system with an integrated tank. The principle is the same: water is only heated when a tap opens, so you don't keep a storage tank hot all day.

The trade-off is flow rate. If you have one bathroom and a kitchen, an on-demand approach is honestly great. It saves floor space and reduces standby losses. If two showers run at the same time while someone fills a sink, the unit can hit its limit. That's a deal-breaker for some homes.

The numbers said a compact on-demand unit would save enough energy to justify it. My gut said the incoming water temperature in that building would make it miserable. My gut was right. On a cold day, incoming mains water is colder, and that reduces the hot water flow rate more than the brochure suggests.

So choose by simultaneous hot water demand, not by brochure. If you need two showers at once, a tanked solution—like a Viessmann hot water tank paired with a boiler or heat pump—is often the better call.

Scenario C: How to reset a Honeywell thermostat with no reset button

Half the support calls we get have nothing to do with the boiler or heat pump. They're thermostat issues. On many retrofit jobs, we install a Honeywell home thermostat because it's reliable and homeowners already understand the interface.

But then the thermostat locks up, there's no tiny reset pinhole, and the homeowner panics. So here is how to reset Honeywell thermostat with no reset button:

  1. Turn off power at the furnace or heat pump breaker.
  2. Pull the thermostat faceplate off the base.
  3. If it uses batteries, take them out.
  4. Wait two minutes. I know it feels long. Two minutes.
  5. Put the batteries back in, remount the faceplate, and restore power.
  6. If there are no batteries, hold the Menu and Blank buttons down for ten seconds while power is restored. If I remember correctly, this works on the T-series, but don't quote me on every model.

After the reset, you'll probably need to reprogram the schedule. That's normal. Write down the current schedule before you reset it.

Real talk: if the thermostat relocks after a reset, the problem isn't the reset procedure. It's a wiring issue, a bad transformer, or a thermostat that's simply done. That's when you call a technician instead of repeating the cycle.

Scenario D: The Ryobi leaf blower rule

The strangest quality issue last year wasn't a refrigeration leak. It was a coil damaged by a leaf blower.

A homeowner used a Ryobi leaf blower to clean leaves off the outdoor heat pump unit every week. The air speed bent the aluminum fins and forced debris deeper into the coil. By summer, the unit was short of airflow and tripping on high pressure.

Please do not use a leaf blower on a heat pump. Even on low speed, a leaf blower is way more aggressive than it feels in your hand. Use a soft brush, a vacuum with a brush attachment, or a gentle garden hose. And keep at least 18 inches of clearance around the unit.

A Ryobi leaf blower is a great tool for the garden. It is not a heat pump maintenance tool. That's a boundary worth respecting.

How to tell which scenario you're in

Start with a heat loss calculation. Then flow temperature. Then electrical capacity. Then hot water demand. Then control preferences. In that order.

If a supplier offers a quote without measuring your house or asking for your energy bills, that's a red flag. If they can't explain the flow temperature of your existing radiators, they don't know whether a heat pump will work.

Quality means knowing the boundary

I've rejected 7% of first deliveries in 2024 because the paperwork didn't match the site. The equipment itself was usually fine. The problem was overpromising: someone sold a solution before checking the details.

Viessmann makes excellent heat pumps and water heating equipment. But I'd rather pair a heat pump with honest expectations than sell it to the wrong house. I'd rather install an on-demand water heater in the right apartment and a tank in the right house. I'd rather reset a Honeywell Home thermostat with a clear procedure than swap out a perfectly good thermostat for another one.

Bottom line: the best equipment only works when it's matched to the building and the way people actually live. Know the limits. Check the spec. Then decide.
