The Viessmann Vitodens 200 Pre-Install Checklist: 8 Steps That Would've Saved Me $3,200

If you're about to install a Viessmann boiler — specifically the Viessmann boiler Vitodens 200 — this checklist is for you. Actually, it's for anyone installing a gas condensing boiler, but I'll keep it specific to the setup I know best.

I've been handling Viessmann installation and service orders for 7 years. I've personally made (and documented) 14 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $3,200 in wasted budget and delays. Now I maintain our team's pre-install checklist, and this is the version I wish someone had handed me in 2017.

Two caveats before we start. My experience is based on about 200 mid-range residential and light commercial installs, mostly in the UK. Step 1: Verify Every Viessmann Heating Part Number Before You Order

  • Trap. The boiler's condensate trap must be primed (filled with water) before firing. A dry trap lets flue gases escape into the room.
  • Cold protection. If the pipe runs through an unheated space, insulate it. I skipped this on one job in late 2021, the pipe froze in February 2022, and the customer lost heating for a day. The emergency callout came out of my own pocket.

Step 4: Sort Out the Controls — and Be Honest About Your Limits

The Vitodens 200 is a seriously efficient boiler — up to 98%, depending on the model and how it's set up. But that efficiency means nothing if the controls are doing dumb things. I've walked into houses where the boiler was running 16 hours a day because a previous installer just slapped on a basic thermostat and left.

Most buyers focus on the boiler's efficiency rating and completely miss the water quality — which is exactly where the real efficiency lives or dies. Sludge, rust, and hard water scale wreck a heat exchanger from the inside, slowly and expensively.

Before I start any boiler, I do a full system flush with a chemical cleaner — not just drain and refill. Then add inhibitor and check the pH. This feels like a "nice to have" until it's not. I installed a boiler in 2023 without a proper flush, and it failed a warranty inspection in Q1 2024 when the heat exchanger started making noise. That mistake cost me more than every other one on this list combined.

Take the extra hour. Do the flush. Log it.

Step 6: Commission With a Flue Gas Analyzer — Every Single Time

Step 7: Register the Warranty and Complete the Benchmark Log
