Seven years in the HVAC trade, handling residential and light commercial heating calls, and I've personally made (and documented) five significant mistakes that totaled roughly $2,000 in callbacks, refunds, and lost trust. That folder of mistakes is now the basis for our team's pre-job checklist. It should have been obvious from mistake number one, but I needed all five.
I used to be the kind of technician who quoted the cheapest fix and moved on. Then the fall of 2022 happened. A Viessmann boiler F4 code stared at me from a display, I misread it, and I cost a customer $340 on a callback that never should've happened.
Here's the lesson, in case you don't want to spend the same money I did: unit price is not cost. That isn't a slogan from a training seminar—it's a math problem I failed five times with my own customers' money and my own reputation.
Mistake #1: I Thought I Understood the F4 Code. I Didn't.
Second year on my own, service call on a Vitodens 100. No heat, and the Viessmann boiler F4 code was flashing on the control panel. My gut said ionization electrode. 'A fault code is a clue, not a verdict.' I say this to every new tech now, and I mean it.
The customer paid for the second visit and quietly switched outfits afterward. That $340 loss wasn't the real loss. The real loss was trust, and trust only shows up on the profit-and-loss statement in hindsight.
Mistake #2: The 'Compatible' Part That Didn't Last

Mistake #3: The $50 Blower That Quit on a Rooftop
Tools don't get enough respect in these conversations, so here's my worst example. I bought a budget cordless blower to clean condensate lines, heat exchangers, and flue vents. It worked fine for eight months. Then it died in late November, on a rooftop, with a customer's flue half-cleaned and the temperature dropping.
I replaced it with a Milwaukee blower—the M18 model, because I was already on that battery platform. That was two winters ago. It's still going, and more importantly, I've never had to explain to a customer why I'm standing there with a dead tool.
I'm not saying everyone needs a Milwaukee blower. What I'm saying is: don't make tool decisions based on the most optimistic month of your cash flow. Base it on what happens when the tool fails. Mistake #4: The ecobee Thermostat That Didn't 'Just Work'

It's a 15-minute job: drain it, wipe it down, run a vinegar-and-water cycle, rinse. It's a maintenance lesson, and it applies to everything I touch in this trade.
The Pushback I Expect
If you're thinking, 'Sure, but sometimes cheap is the only option,' I hear you. I've had months where the budget was the budget. There's no shame in a tight number.
But here's where I push back: cheapest is a decision, not a strategy. The market doesn't reward you for being cheap twice. It just sends you a second invoice—in labor, in callbacks, in tools that die at the wrong time, in trust. That's the part nobody quotes ahead of time.
I still compete on price. I still respect a budget. But I run the boiler's fault tree before I replace parts, I buy genuine Viessmann heating parts when the job calls for them, I carry a Milwaukee blower that survives a rooftop November, I verify ecobee thermostat compatibility before I promise it, and yes—I tell people to clean their countertop ice makers. The price of a thing is just the price of the thing. The cost is everything it takes to keep it working, and that's the number that actually matters.
